Many divers choose to schedule it right after their Open Water course or at the start of a holiday so they can spend the rest of their trip enjoying deeper, more adventurous fun dives
What you will learn
During the Advanced Open Water Diver Course you typically complete five training dives, each with clear goals and skills
You will:
- Practice accurate underwater navigation using a compass, natural landmarks, kick‑cycles and timing so you can find your way without relying on a guide
- Learn how to plan and safely execute deeper dives, usually in the 18–30 m (60–100 ft) range, including gas planning and recognizing how depth affects your body and equipment.
- Refine buoyancy and propulsion so you use less air, move more efficiently and protect fragile marine life and the reef.
- Apply practical safety habits such as better buddy checks, ascent control, and the use of dive computers and signaling devices.
The exact mix of skills depends on the specialty dives you choose with your instructor.
Typical adventure dives you can choose
Most agencies require two core dives (Deep and Navigation), then let you choose three more adventure dives that match your interests.
Common options include:
- Night dive – experience the reef after dark and manage light, communication and comfort in low visibility
- Wreck dive – explore a wreck while learning safe approaches, basic mapping and awareness of overhead hazards
- Peak performance buoyancy – fine‑tune weighting, trim and control so you hover effortlessly and improve air consumption.
- Drift dive – learn to plan and enjoy current‑assisted dives using surface markers and boat procedures.
- Underwater naturalist or fish ID – understand what you are looking at so every dive becomes more interesting and memorable
Your chosen adventure dives can usually be credited toward full specialty courses later, saving you time and extra training dives
Course structure and schedule
Most Phuket Advanced Open Water programs run over 2 days with 5 dives, sometimes with an optional fun or extra training dive depending on the operator.
A typical schedule looks like this:
-
Before the course: Online self‑study or a short theory review covering deep diving, navigation and your chosen adventure dives, so you spend more time in the water and less in a classroom
- Day 1: Day 1: Boat trip with two or three training dives focusing on buoyancy, navigation and one chosen specialty, plus safety and planning briefings from your instructor.
- Day 2: Another full‑day trip with your deep dive and remaining adventure dives, then logbook review and certification once requirements are complete
Unlike an entry‑level course, there is usually less classroom time and more practical, in‑water training
Required and optional dives
Both PADI and SSI‑style Advanced courses in Phuket follow a similar idea: two core dives plus a set of “adventure” or specialty dives you choose with your instructor.
Mandatory dives:
-
Deep dive (to a maximum training depth of 30 m for adults, with shallower limits for junior divers) Underwater navigation dive using compass and natural navigation techniques.

Safety, medical and age considerations
To enroll, you must meet basic health and fitness requirements for scuba diving and complete standard medical and liability forms. Some medical conditions require written clearance from a physician before diving, and reputable dive centers will insist on this when needed
Equipment, boats and what’s included
During the course you use standard scuba equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, weights and dive computer), plus extra items such as a compass, surface marker buoy and—for some dives—torches, reels or cameras. Most Phuket dive centers run the Advanced course from comfortable day‑trip boats with shaded decks, lunch, drinks and onboard briefings between dives.
What this certification lets you do next
- After earning your Advanced Open Water Diver certification, you can:
- Join trips and guided dives that require advanced or deep certification, often including more remote or exciting sites
- Continue directly into rescue‑level training or start full specialty courses like Deep, Wreck, Night or Enriched Air Nitrox
- Log more dives with better skills and lower stress, making every holiday or weekend trip more rewarding
- Count the dives from this course toward future specialties, giving you a head start on more advanced qualifications.
Like any training course if you pre-study you are well ahead of the game on the learning curve. It is important to remember that the top globally recognized agencies are similar brands that meet the same international standards. It’s worth pointing out at this point that the Instructor for your course has the biggest influence on the quality of the courses and the divers they produce.
This higher certification level allows you to dive down to 30 meters (100 feet) providing you complete the deep adventure dive.
The 2 largest agencies have been around since 1969 and 1970, respectively, and have high-quality teaching materials and high standards. Both brands are certified by the WRSTC (World Recreational Scuba Training Council) and the ISO/EUF (International Standards Organisation/European Underwater Federation). The knowledge and skill requirements are almost identical which means certifications are equivalent, interchangeable, and recognized globally.
If you sign up for the Advanced Open Watercourse, you will receive access to the digital learning materials
While each chapter documents a specific aspect or type of dive it is important to read them all to understand and appreciate all the course skills.
You can choose 5 exciting adventure dives from the Manual and listen to a dive briefing by the instructor who will review the Adventure Dive objectives and performance requirements while giving you an overview of the dive site and what marine life is common to the area. You log each dive in the digital log book on the My SSI application
