Buoyancy is critical when deep diving and is directly related to proper weighting. Your instructor will show you how to properly weight yourself, and practice buoyancy control in the pool or confined water.
Surface Air Consumption rates are an important part of deep dive planning. Your instructor will show you how to estimate your SAC rates prior to the open water training sessions.
Navigation skills are important to all divers; if you are not familiar or not comfortable with navigation techniques, you should take a Navigation Specialty program from your SSI Dive Center.
Why take the Deep Diver Course?
Phuket has some good deep dive sites that make this one of the best locations for diving Deep. There is something about deep diving that excites us all and something mysterious about exploring deeper sites maybe it’s a shipwreck. Most of us just need that first experience of a deep dive with a private instructor to get us hooked. The Deep Diver Specialty course gives us that boost of confidence to dive safely down to 40 meters/130 feet.
What’s involved in Deep Water Training Dives?
Your private training starts by meeting your instructor and reviewing the Theory and reasons for our passion for deep diving, and how important safety is in order to know our limits and restriction for diving on Air or Enriched air while doing a deep dive. Deep water training dives you’ll Learn the following.
Deep Dive planning
The first step in the diving process is always to make a dive plan. If you are using a computer to plan your dives, be sure that you follow the same maximum depth and procedures you use when planning using the SSI Dive Tables. All deep dives should be planned within the Doppler no-decompression limits.
Let us review a few basic points about dive planning. When planning your maximum depth, remember to use the exact depth listed on the dive tables or, if it is between, round it up to the next greatest number. For example, if you are planning a dive to 25.5 meters which is the bottom, then you would round your depth to 27 meters.
If you are planning on making a repetitive dive, there are a few basic rules you will need to follow; always make the deepest dive first, and pre-plan both dives to ensure you will have enough bottom time left to complete your second dive. For example, if you do not take the time to plan through your second dive, you may find that you will need a surface interval of almost 6 hours in order to make two 30 meter dives in one day. If you do not plan ahead, you may end up making your second dive to only 12 meters.
The planning stage is more than a time to make a dive profile; it is also a time for buddies to talk about hand signals, to learn about each others equipment and how it functions, and to discuss important topics such as a lost buddy procedure. For example, you should know how your buddy’s power inflator operates and what kind of alternate air source he has in case of an emergency. The more thorough the plan, the higher the comfort level on the dive. Your SSI Total DiveLog page will step you through this process.
Descent procedures
The deep diving process begins before the diver ever enters the water. Deep diving is all about planning and then rechecking everything to minimize the chance of something going wrong. As we mentioned in the first two sections, making a dive plan and preparing your equipment is critical to the deep diving process. Plan your dive; dive your plan!
Proper descent procedures include going down feet first, with the power infiltrator in your left hand while facing your buddy. You must remain aware of your buddy’s needs at all times, and be on the lookout for general problems. Your descent rate should not exceed your comfort level. Descending too fast may cause squeezes, disorientation or an out-of-control situation. You must be heavy enough to make a controlled descent, without being so heavy that you cannot compensate with your buoyancy compensator to slow your descent if needed. This is why a line is helpful when descending. The diver can slow down if necessary, stop to equalize ears, readjust a piece of equipment, or check on his or her buddy. You can also make a descent using a wall, kelp, or the slope of the beach as visual references.
